It is not even known to what extent organizations would be willing to delegate responsibilities to the line managers. This has initiated the current research as it could help the academia as well as the organizations in their decision-making process. Although delegation benefits the individual employee as well as the organization, the barriers and challenges in the delegation are also many. With the aim to examine the effect of delegating HR functions to line managers and particularly to what extent they are successful in motivating their subordinates, five objectives were set in Chapter I and two hypotheses formed which have been presented after extensive literature review.

Literature from past studies from selected academic journals and books have been reviewed on the subject and the framework for the study formed. This was a quantitative study and the instrument for data collection was a survey questionnaire. Data from five line managers and 40 employees from five organizations in Saudi Arabia from different sectors of the economy were collected. All five objectives of the study have been achieved and the hypotheses tested. The study concludes that delegating functions to line managers have definite benefits to the organization to the HR department and to the line managers concerned.

Line managers are better positioned to handle the employees, to establish effective communication with them and to enhance their motivation level. Resolution of conflicts is also faster as line managers have a close relationship with their subordinates and they can communicate and relate easily. Line managers gain in the process as it enhances their people management skills which enables them to relate effectively with their subordinates.Whether delegating authority to line managers positively impacts employee motivation has also been evaluated.
