Analysis Of Interpersonal Relationship The outline I. The importance of communication The ability to communicate plays a critical role in personal and professional lives and learning how it works will help an individual to master the most important skills. They will be needed to communicate to a single person and a group of people. II. The Communication Process The process of communication is the result of sending-receiving messages and providing certain opportunities for feedback. Principles of human communication: To understand the human communication, an individual uses one of several principles. Here communication is used for certain purpose; its elements change all the time, are interdependent and depend on the individual’s meaning and effect, an individual is a speaker and a listener; communication behaviors involve a package of signals such as messages and gestures; communication is also a process of adjustment to all forms of communication; it includes the relationship dimensions; communication can be ambiguous due to the different terms and meanings; it is the never ending process. III. Communication competence  Understanding and knowledge of how communication works and ability of one to use its effectively constitutes communication competency. Analysis of interpersonal relationship Principles of human communication Effective communication is the security of long-term relationship, especially in marriage. As the form of human communication, interpersonal communication refers to communication between two persons and building a relationship based on such form of communication means to be more interrelated with the partner and to make certain impact on the other person and be under the impact likewise. This interpersonal communication can be either pleasant or cause a conflict situation. Hence, understanding principles of communication is essential. For the relationship which I have with my wife, it is critical to be aware these principles of communication as they impact the way we understand each other. As one of the principles, the purpose of our communication is different since the different of our genders. In know that for me communication means more as means to receive or give certain information, while for my wife it is the way to connect it with our relationship. However, despite the difference in communicating, we both agree that good communication helps to assist each other and influence certain change of attitude and behaviors, which is good for our marriage. We try to adjust our differences to the common sight angle and avoid unnecessary conflict situations. The package of signals of communication is also what makes it difficult to build good relationship. The fact that facial expression and body posture communicate one type of emotions when communicating with each other and other true emotions are left deeply inside each of us tells that it in fact me and my wife can bring disagreement on certain situation. Such contradictory messages are the result of two different emotions and feelings and are real challenge for our relationship as then one side is satisfied with the result of actions or events while the other one is not satisfied. But for the sake of another and for each of us to be satisfied with something, me or my wife are still not satisfied with the result of certain communication agreement. I think it is better to show true emotions and feelings when communicating and discuss the different perception of one and the same event rather than to hide disagreement and negative attitude and show positive emotions. The other communication principle that refers to our relationship is the involvement of content and the dimension of relationship. It can be usually seen through discussing of time spent separately with our friends. When I speak about the organized meeting with colleagues in Friday night, my wife usually argues about us to be very little together on Fridays. Here I try to respond that any other day can be appropriate for common maters and my message is clear to me, however, my wife focuses more not on the message and its content, but more on the relational level of it, ignoring my expressing the desire to go with colleagues on this particular Friday night. However, when understanding that bringing the same content of the message “I will go and meet my friends on Friday night” into “Do you mind me going” it is possible to show the relational dimension as well and such expression of the desire will be my wife’s decision to attend the event, not mine, and thus conflict situation about Fridays spent separately. I also find it necessary to my family to understand communication is ambiguous, especially when it comes to the expressions like “Right away” and “In a minute”. It can cause a conflict situation when I say I will do certain task in a minute which in fact lasts hours and finally my wife is ready to complete the task by herself showing her sincere disagreement with my message and actions. She as the listener of my message “In a minute” interpreted it in her own way and got offended when it was not met her requirements, while I was completely calm about the usual message. However, while these situations occurred in the past, in certain period of time this ambiguity was reduced in communicating meaning and in relationship, helping me and my wife to understand personal characteristic of each of us. Communication competence  While it is considered that communication competencies enable one to be knowledgeable and understand how communication works, certain competencies impede the relationship. Here I find the inability to listen to each other is the serious barrier to effective communication. Despite the situation discussion or a question asked, there is a certain inability to listen to each other when we rather have different points of views and do not listen to what other says. Effective communication means speaking and listening as well. It is also supported by our wrong consideration of being a mindful communicator. Despite the fact that we share information, we do not fluidly process information. I think it is because we both have certain stereotypes on situations and events and this cause more conflict in establishing our relationship. However, I should admit that when we both try to paraphrase certain information and messages, it becomes more possible to understand each other and here active listening promotes good and right perception of verbal and non-verbal messages. Our ethical considerations as to what is good and bad and right and wrong usually hinder our relationship. Hence, the communication competence of being ethical should be paid more attention by me and my wife and not only in terms of understanding what is acceptable for each other, but for how our relationship should be built in regard to these differences. The way we perceive the same things and situations in a different way causes certain conflict between us. There are sometimes only black and white options for my wife or the right and wrong situations, while I perceive them as the successful ends which are justified by means. This in turn helps me to understand some norms of other people as well, which are similar to my wife’s and to perceive other people with respect and understanding. I consider that ethics of a message depend on the cultural peculiarities of certain person, own cultural values and beliefs, and particular situation. Being different at this point, ethical communicator competence hinders our relationship. The competent communicator is capable making effective choices. However, in the relationship with my wife we usually meet the new situation with the perceptions of the similar old event. Here I prefer communicate it in a different way while my wife considers the single way of dealing with such situation and no other ways exist for her. At the same time, an effective communicator can make a choice from the wide arsenal of available choices and when I send such message to my wife, we can agree at some common point. The difference in this competence creates barrier for effective communication between us, but listening to each other’s position helps to avoid a conflict. Being media literate is also a competence of effective communicator. However, I am not of the same consideration as my wife, as I do not tend to be more socially involved and do not trust news that media provides. Despite that, my wife finds media helpful in being more social, she tends to analyze its messages and influence them, creating own mediated messages. It is more women’s interests in creating own media messages while men do not follow the same line. It impedes our relationship in terms of lack of understanding of each other and why, for example I am not involved creation of own media messages when my wife is almost a professional in it. However, understanding that media is the new way of how people express their thoughts, I find it appropriate to discuss it with my wife and thus use this competence as an advantage for both of us.
