A Report of Identification of Unknown Organism Student name: Tutor’s name: Institution: Date of submission Introduction Of the various reasons why a learner should have proper knowledge concerning the identity of microorganisms, the most important of them are that the knowledge will enable one to know what causes a disease in the life of a human being. This is considered very crucial since it only through identifying the bacteria which causes that particular disease that the disease can be cured. Another reason is that knowing these microorganisms will be very useful for one who wishes to make antibiotics or even some foods. It is, therefore, critical that a learner treats such issues with the highest degree of seriousness because someday he might be required to apply in real life situation whatever the lesson he learned from the laboratory. The following is a report of an unknown organism Materials and methods In the procedures, all the requirements are assembled so that the result can be trusted. This is because time wasted in the name of searching for other elements when the process is underway may lead to dubious conclusions (Samuels et al. 2012, p.45). The laboratory manual is the guideline here and therefore every procedure is done based on the information in the laboratory manual. The test was conducted on Gram stain. First, it was very necessary to eliminate any foreign material out of the microorganism to ensure that it was devoid of any foreign substance. The procedure was labeled as letter A and it was the laboratory technician that it was obtained. The method used for removing the foreign substances from the microorganism was through the T streak. The gram stain was then gram stain oxidase bromcresol purple lactose broth The indole Citrate Methyl red Motility 37 ONPG test Acetoin production test Test Aim of the test The reagents The observations The outcome Test for gram stain To ascertain whether the bacteria reacts Ethanol, safranin, iodine and crystal violet The color of rods was pink The unknown A was a gram negative rod Test for oxidase To confirm whether cytochrome was present. The oxidase paper The color gradually changed to black and purplish The cytochrome was present and therefore, the test was positive. bromcresol purple lactose broth To ascertain whether the bacterium in question can ferment a given carbohydrate There was no reagent at all. The color of bromcresol lactose broth changed from its normal purple to yellow The result was positive and lactose can ferment a carbohydrate for that matter The indole test To confirm whether there is a possibility of an organism splitting indole from a tryptophan About one to one and a half milliliters of tryptone broth is mixed with kovac To the upper part of the broth there was a red ring running around. The test was positive as the organism was capable of splitting indole from a tryptophan. The laboratory module conducted this and according to the results, the unknown microorganism labeled A was a gram negative rod. In another test which was for oxide, the cytochrome was present and in a test which was conducted on Brom cresol purple lactose broth, it was confirmed that lactose can indeed be ferment a carbohydrate. In the other test, it was equally confirmed that the organism can split from tryptophan (Samuels et al. 2012, p.41). As I had earlier stated, such tests are very necessary because they will enable somebody to know the correct microorganism he will require if he wishes to make any food or antibiotic. For example, if it is food which needs to be fermented then that person will choose to use Brom Cresol lactose broth and so on. In another experiment, the tests for citrate and methyl red were conducted. Test The reagents Temperature The observations The outcome Its interpretation The citrate The citrate slant which is usually green in color 34 degrees centigrade The color was observed changing from green to blue The result was positive The organism undoubtedly obtains its carbon from citrate. Methyl red Methyl Red and Vokes Proskauer 34 degrees centigrade In the event of mixing one and a half milliliters of Vokes Proskauer and methyl red the color changed from pale yellow to dark yellow The result was therefore negative. This can be interpreted that the organism in question failed to produce much acid from glucose. It so happened that most of the tests were positive except that one for methyl red Since the aim of the experiment was to determine if the organism could produce acid but the results were negative. These tests were imperative for a student who wished to apply them outside the laboratory as they could repeat them in life situation while at home. It was very necessary that the tests be repeated severally to ascertain the results, and the results remained active all the same except for methyl red which remained negative for that matter. In an oxidase test which was conducted to determine whether cytochrome was present, the color changed from purple to black, and this confirmed the aim of the experiment. In a bromcresol lactose broth test, the color changed from purple, its original color, to yellow and this observation confirmed the primary aim of the experiment which was to determine whether lactose can ferment a carbohydrate. From the observations, it is evident that for a student to be able to relate the theory part of these tests and the practical itself, one needs to have a clear aim of the experiment and what to expect afterward. When indole test was conducted, the result was positive as well, and this insinuates that the organism was capable of splitting indole from tryptophan. The unknown organism A was, therefore, Morganella morgamil ). which are a rod-shaped bacterium living in the intestines of a warm-blooded animal. They are usually found in the lower intestine for that matter and even though they are not very harmful, some may severely poison food in the life of people hosting them (Sijmons et al. 2013, p.21). Therefore, they are not entirely harmless. They presence in the intestine of a human being at times is very ambivalent because, in as much as they contaminate food sometimes, they are also responsible for the production of vitamin K2, also known as menaquinone, which is paramount in the process of blood coagulation. This vitamin is also very essential in lowering heart disease. Apart from reducing the risk of heart disease, it also reduces the risk of prostate cancer. This vitamin is believed to be obtained from foods like meat, poultry, cheese, eggs, and butter among others. The cells of the organism can survive outside the body of its host for quite some time, and it is highly believed that apart from aiding in the production of menaquinone, it also opens avenue diseases in the body of the host (Sijmons et al. 2013, p.49). Due to its ability to shift to fermentation, it is considered one of the unique organisms in the world. It best grows at 37 degrees centigrade and human intestines are an ideal place for that matter. Through anaerobic respiration, it is able to survive in an area which is completely devoid of oxygen. In conclusion, a test to determine an organism is paramount because it gives the learner the knowledge which he can apply out of school when making antibiotics or food. It is also important that the test is conducted in accordance with the laboratory module as this is the only surest way of ensuring that the procedures are valid. When this test was performed, it had to be repeated severally to make sure that the results do not change.
