Final paper basing on the materials of the film treatment project Affiliation: Introduction Many people wonder if there are any other creatures there that have the potential of thinking and acting rationally as human beings do. The common question here becomes “are we alone?” In this question, ‘we’ refer to human race hence questioning if the human race is the only creature on Earth that does and behaves in specific actions. In case other creatures different from human beings exist, and then the answer to the question will be “we are not alone.” However, upon looking at the rationality of aliens, their technology capacity and the reasoning limits as their characteristics, it thus leads to the thesis that; we are not alone creatures in earth that have the potential of behaving and acting rationally. The paper is going to justify on this thesis by looking at the alien species as comparison to the humans. Section 1: Summary of Film treatment Project The story is about human species exploring the planet Mars and encountering new creatures, the aliens, through this process. The story starts by giving a brief description of how one can encounter some creatures that may seem uncommon at any place. In most cases, there is a possibility of viewing these creatures behaving in a manner that is extraordinary and different from the normal. It is significant hard to determine the origin of these creatures as some of them might be exploring the earth, just like what the human race does. The story then goes on to explain as the how the human race visits planet Mars on several occasions for purposes of exploration. While they go about with this mission, the human race does not realize that they are being watched by some creatures, later identified as aliens.1 These aliens get irritated by how the human race invades their territories more often, thus plan to counterattack these visitors. The aliens kidnap the scientists visiting their planet and demand explanation as to why the human race is invading their territory. Despite the challenge with means of communication, they manage to communicate and air out their concerns. The humans explain that their purpose for visiting planet Mars is for exploration, but not taking over the entire planet where the aliens live. After airing their concerns, the humans, and the aliens reach an agreement. From the story, one can learn that the aliens also exist in their world just in the manner that the humans are in the world. In this case, the story ends by concluding that any unknown creatures that we might encounter could be on the mission of exploring the new area. Therefore, people need to learn and understand these creatures called the aliens could be having the same rights of being on earth as they are also exploring new territories. Section 2: How the project engages with the class topic “Are We Alone” At first, the project is discussing the possibility of other creatures comparable to human beings existing in their world. The first thing that comes to one’s mind is the theme of scientific fiction. It is whereby human beings come into first meeting with some extraterrestrial life, or simply implying that any sentient race comes to a first encounter with another race. The project connects with the class topic ‘are we alone’ through the genre of Angel Alien, Incommunicable Alien 1. Through this genre, there are several ideas that one can connect the project to the class topic. At first, the aliens and the humans story brings out the picture of Angels that are mythic through the manner of which these creatures end up working together. It all starts with confusion and fear existing among the alien population, but upon airing their fears, these creatures end up reaching an agreement with the humans. Later, the aliens even assist the humans in construction a landing space on their planet, together with helping the humans with moving directions. The ability of the aliens to calm down and reach an agreement with humans is an indication that these creatures are not that wild and that they can also be friendly. In the similar capacity, the reaction of humans upon realizing that they have become victims of abduction portrays the picture of rational and respectful creatures. In this case, both parties that meet in first time show their kindness, being angels of their making. The concept thus shows that ‘’we are not alone’ as there are other creatures that behave and act rationally just as the human race does. Another idea that connects to the class topic is the abduction stories. In the story, the aliens are afraid that the human race is invading their territory and thus fear of unknown. They thus use their intelligence to think of a possible solution that would stop the humans from invading their space. The solution was to abduct the humans when they return to their planet. The idea was to send a terrifying message back to other humans that would wish to continue with such visits again. They manage to abduct the humans and demanded more explanations for disturbing their peace. Eventually, the aliens learn that the humans are here for different reasons and reach an agreement to build the landing space in an area where fewer aliens will be disturbed. Through this idea, it is apparent that there are other creatures that reason just in the same way that the humans do, therefore concluding that we are not alone. Secondly, the project connects with the class topic ‘are we alone’ through the genre of incommunicable alien 2. Through this genre, there are several ideas that one can connect the project to the class topic. The first idea that pops up is the concept of technology as part of the embedded intelligence. In the story, technology is in use by creatures, the humans, and the aliens. The humans use different technologies while engaging in the exploration activities. They also use technology when communicating to others. Part of the machines used for going to visit planet Mars, such as big ships, are products of technology. Also, there was a situation where the aliens could not communicate with the humans, but with of a microphone, which is part of technology, they were eventually able to communicate. Similarly, the aliens have their ability of technology application. There is a concept whereby the aliens can extract useful metals from the minerals of ore for building their spacecraft.2 All of these characteristics point to technology as part of the embedded intelligence for both creatures, thus implying ‘we are not alone.’ The second idea that pops up through this film project is the concept of reason and the limits of modernism. The two creatures that come into contact in the first time both demonstrate their ability of reasoning. At first, the human race is subject to portray as a reasoning creature in that it engages in exploration missions. The purpose of going to Planet Mars while using large ships all originates from the reasoning ability. The potential of human race creating a shop that traverses across the universe is an indication of modernism limits. In the similar capacity, the aliens have been able to demonstrate their ability to reason. For example, they ask themselves as to why the human race is invading their space and hence make the decision of jointly participating in the kidnap. Also, the ability of the aliens using a microphone to communicate back to the humans is an indication of modernism limits. All of these characteristics thus indicate that the human race are not alone since there are other creatures that have the same potential and capacity of reasoning and applying modernism in various applications. Section 3: Formulating the question “are we alone” with your film treatment project? In the entire project, one needs to take one side of the creatures involved in this story. In this case, I am a human being, hence implying that I am part of the ‘we.’ The question ‘are we alone’ thus tries to figure out if there are other creatures out there that act, reason, and behave similarly to the manner that we do in our daily life activities. Having this in mind, it thus dictates the manner of which one analyses these creatures through comparison to how the humans conduct their activities. The humans and the aliens come into contact with each other for the first time through a fictitious story. Through their first encounter, the humans and the aliens realize that they share many things. At first, anyone would be cautious and inquisitive upon learning new creatures within your territory. In the same manner, the aliens portray the same character, which is similar to how the humans might reach upon learning that new unidentified creatures are within the territories. The manner of which these aliens behave and reach an agreement with the humans thus raises many unanswered questions. It thus leads to the question asking are the humans the only creature that reason, communicate, and act through certain characteristics? In case other creatures that have the capacity of portraying these same characteristics are in existence, then it will lead to the solution that ‘we’ are probably not alone. Section 4: Answer to the question “are we alone” in the film treatment project In the entire project, the aliens have been subject to compare to the humans through numerous characteristics. For example, the aliens seem to act and behave rationally in the same manner that the humans act and behave. The aliens also have the ability to reason and use technology to their advantage, which is similar to the humans. The project has also been able to indicate that the aliens and the humans seem to have the same interests, which is exploration through limits of modernism. The ability of aliens and humans reaching an agreement and becoming friends in the end also indicates that these two different creatures share common characteristics. Combining all of these characteristics, it thus leads to the solution that ‘we are not alone.’ It implies that there are other creatures there that are comparable to humans, hence concluding ‘we are not alone.’ List of four ideas from the100 ideas used Aliens are mythic Angeles Abduction stories Technology as embedded intelligence Reason and the limits of modernism Reference Däniken, E.
